The Pootie Tang Screen Test

I don't know how long I'm going to leave this up here but...

basically, here's what this is: During the process of getting Pootie Tang financed, Paramount Pictures asked me to do a screen test. I was largely untested as a director, so they wanted me to show that I had some ability to direct the movie I had written. So we shot this on Beta in an afternoon and took a few hours to cut it together.

This test was shot by Paul Koestner, who is the Director of Photography I used on Tomorrow Night (my first feature) and on all of my short films. He is an excellent DP.

The stunts were coordinated by Manny suvarius who ended up doing all the stunt coordination on the feature. I might have Manny's last name here. If anyone knows, please email me a correction. The "Capuera" style kicking was performed by Pootie's regular double on the feature. He went by the name "Herbie". I will try to find out more about him.

The part of "Mampy" is played by Chuck Jefferies, who played "Bad Bitty" in the feature and who was also a key stuntman for us. He's in Pootie Tang about a hundred times doubling for various people.

The girl is played by Tammy Faye Starlight, who played a "dirty Dee Girl" in the feature. Pootie is played, of course, by the very talented Lance Crouther.

So that's what this is. It's about 3:55 long (minutes). I actually think we got the belt effect better here than we ever did in the feature. Those of you who have watched the movie a lot might recognize this location. It's where we shot Pootie being held up at knifepoint, and then shot by Rick Shapiro.
